Opera Documentary History
The voices of Lapinha and D’Apparecida
Between opera and popular song, between quiet acts of resistance and dazzling triumphs, Marias do Brasil pays tribute to two major yet little-known figures of the operatic stage: Maria Joaquina Lapinha and Maria d’Apparecida.

Two Black women, artists of major significance, whose life journeys—though powerful—were marked by structural erasure. Here, the question of race is not a mere detail: it lies at the ethical and symbolic core of the entire project. This tribute is not at all an act of repair, visibility and attentive listening to the voices of Black female ancestry.

Brazilian singers Bruno de Sá and Luanda Siqueira, with the ensemble Americantiga, under the musical and artistic direction of Ricardo Bernardes, and guided by stage direction from Ligiana Costa and dramaturgy by Sofia Boito, evoke their stories in an innovative format blending opera and documentary. This hybrid form has captivated audiences of all nationalities through two powerful and moving narratives.
